Anyway, it’s been a bit since I posted, circumstances and such.  Friday I really had nothing to post.  I spent the day doing stuff in Kansas City, which was really nice.  They have a liquor store with a bourbon selection about triple anything in town.  I have a BOBS this week, so I picked something up I am pretty sure nobody has tried, and MAYBE a thing or two for myself.  >_>

Spent the rest of the day shopping with the wife, and it was really nice except for the rain.  I was OK with it though because there was no lightning in the forecast so my swim was safe.  Right?

Wrong.  Got to the pool, and there was a sign on the door.  Closed for a private party.  Grrr.

Oh well, can’t control that.  Saturday came along and I was feeling really motivated.  It was pouring outside though, so I did my hour run on the treadmill.  It’s a great tool for times like this, but it is sooooooo boring to run that way.  It was that or get soaked through and deal with 20 mph winds to boot.  So I did the treadmill.

Later that evening I was feeling extra motivated, so I did my bike workout for Sunday.  I finished after 11PM, but I was thrilled to have gotten it done.  It would make Sunday an easy day, and all I would have is my swim.  I was determined to do a great swim to make up for Friday.

However, I am well aware of Murphy and his damned laws.  I got my swimsuit on and was preparing to go when I had this funny feeling I should check the pool hours today.  99 times out of 100 that just confirms the pool is open and its fine.  However, wouldn’t you know it?  Today the pool is closed for a swim meet.

I mean, the WHOLE day.  not even any evening hours.  All my good intentions, poof.  I should have waited to do that bike, because now I have nothing.

Sometimes all you can do is laugh.  Oh, and have a drink of the bourbon I bought Friday.

Sprinklers are a funny thing for runners.

On hot days, they’re great.  They can be a moment of refreshment that can give you a bit of a boost.  I’ve actually run INTO sprinklers on purpose to have that wonderful cool water during a hot day’s run.

But that isn’t so great on a cold day.

So on my run today, as I was about an hour in and heading up what is basically the main thoroughfare at lunch hour, I noted someone had their sprinklers going.  NEVERMIND that we’ve gotten enough rain around here in the last month to grow a rainforest, their sprinklers were going.  This is not a wide sidewalk so I didn’t have much room to maneuver, but I did my best.

Unfortunately it was the type of sprinkler that strobes.  And right as I ran by, it strobed right into my crotch.

At first, all I worried about was the icy water hitting my sensitive areas on what was a fairly brisk Spring day.  It was about 50 or so.  Not terrible, but not really a day I wanted soaked shorts.  Not to mention that can cause chafing and all sorts of other issues.  I was merely mildly annoyed at that point.

Then, when I got to an intersection and needed to wait for the light to change, I looked down.  Yeah.  Without the context of a sprinkler in sight, now I have this gigantic wet spot on the front of my shorts.

And I am suddenly, very, VERY conscious that I am running into traffic, and there are dozens of cars.

Mustering as much dignity as I could, I finished my run.  It’s not like I actually wet myself, but that’s exactly how it looked.  All I could do was laugh.

Other than that it was a great run, very nice day out and perfect for it.  Not working made it so I could do it mid-morning rather than at 0 dark-thirty before work.  I need to enjoy that luxury while I have it.

Clearly if there is such a thing, I need to call them.  Of course, during my Staycation I have to keep my inbox cleared.  The worst thing a supervisor can do to me during a vacation is to send me some huge project with a “we’ll talk about it next week” ending.  SERIOUSLY?  Do you people know who I am?

Of course I can’t let it go, and I’ve spent the last hour and a half trying to get started on the thing.  Its pretty much an impossible project too: clearly something somebody threw over the wall hoping against hope I might be able to get it done.  I’ve got feelers out to everyone in my profession I can even think of looking for leads.  I’m not hopeful.  Meanwhile, now my mind is on work and not on relaxing.

It sucks.

Yesterday’s brick went well, as did today’s bike.  I actually had to talk myself into doing the bike today.  I just didn’t feel like doing a 35 minute workout.  Not because that seemed too long, but because it seemed to short to be worth the time.

When did that happen? Lol.

Now I am looking at the clock and realizing how late it is.  If I’m going to make it to the pool, I better get going.  Sadly though, I’m more distracted by work now than I would be in a regular week.

Sigh.

Rest Day

….signing up for a second event this year.  It’s one of my favorites, and I just couldn’t miss it.

See, I am doing an off-season plan to get ready for my training.  That wraps up in a few weeks.  At the recommendation of the plan, they want me to take a week off training before heading into the IM training plan so I have that set up for the second week of May.

Now, there are 2 reasons I planned not to do other events this year, one is the money.  That is still a valid reason, but meh.  The second is I don’t want secondary events to alter my training schedule, either with different workouts or unplanned rest days or what have you.  But this particular event happens to fall exactly during that break week.  That means I don’t have to worry about it.

The event is a half marathon in Bucyrus KS called Running With the Cows.  It’s one of those races that is put on by the community, and it shows.  It’s not that fantastic or scenic of a course, but the people there have a really, really good time with their event and pretty much an entire church in this small town puts it on.  Because THEY have so much fun, the runners have that much fun too.  What do I mean by fun?  Well, check out these finishers medals and race shirts:

The shirts are some of the loudest, silliest shirts ever.  I love wearing mine.  Oh, and all the runners get cowbells too.  See what I mean about just plain being cute?

Also, the post race food is something special.  It’s basically a potluck put on by the community.  I mean the whole community, businesses to grandmas cooking in their homes.  They have a room roughly the size of a basketball court and it’s wall to wall tables and food.  I’m serious.  Everything from breakfast burritos, doughnuts, pizza, sandwiches, BBQ, cookies, salad, soups, you name it.  I can’t even.  You have to run 13.1 miles to make enough room.

Having done this 3 years running I would have hated to miss it this year.  So I caved.  Oh well, it will be fun I am sure!

As tough as things were last week, this weekend has been outstanding!  That’s a welcome shift, cause they didn’t need to keep going the direction they had been.

First off, Friday night’s swim actually happened!  The pool did not close, it sprinkled but did not thunder or lightning.  It had been 9 days since I had been able to use the pool, and I was a bit worried about how I would do with this 2000m swim.

Crushed it.

I mean, I felt absolutely great, and my time was right where I want it to be.  I’m budgeting 90 minutes to do the IM swim, and at the pace I did over half of it on Friday I would have finished in 75.  6 months out from the event, I’ll take it.

Then, Saturday’s bike was a long one but I felt great on that too.  I went hard during the intervals, even straying into low Z4 at times.  I was thoroughly tired by the end of it, but it was a great workout.

It also turned out to be a great day.  We had planned on going to the K-State Spring Football Game, and had considered going to a local tulip festival.  However, we had a very amped up Aussie and a beautiful afternoon, so in the end we took the girl out to Junction City on the Riverwalk they have out there.  It’s a nice, wide trail through the woods near Fort Riley, and open enough she could run around off-leash.  She had a ball, and it served as our new adventure for the day since we had never been there.

Of course, she brought home several friends (ticks) for the first time.  So we got to pull those off.  I think we found them all–but yuck.  Hate ticks.

This morning both the wife and I had a long run, and while we don’t run anywhere near the same pace, the relative distances meant we’d be running for about the same amount of time.  She took Scully with her to the base of our local running trail, and I went the opposite direction.  We planned to meet up at her start point.  Beautiful running day and we timed it perfectly.  Scully and I took a post running picture together afterwards:

Now we are headed out to the 2-dollar theater to see Beauty and the Beast.  I haven’t seen it yet and it was my favorite Disney animated feature, so I’m looking forward to it.  It also serves as my “adventure” for the day.

Staycation is here!

Apr 21: Day 68

Sometimes my weight bounces and I completely get where it’s coming from.  This morning was a surprise.  I’ve been pretty on point with my nutrition all week.

Maybe it’s hormonal.

Anyway, STAYCATION IS HERE!  Well, it is after today.  I’ll be taking a week off work and going exactly nowhere.  Can’t really afford to go anywhere with the big trip already planned in October, and I need a mental break from work.

It’s something I don’t do often enough, I think.  Usually I’m the type who has close to maxed vacation in the bank and only takes time off for big, big things.  Sometimes though, I think it’s good to actually, truly, take a break.  Full on vacations can be just as stressful as work sometimes with the travel, strange places, strange food, hectic scheduling of “fun”, etc.  Weekends are usually so chock full of “have-to” things you’ve saved up all week that you never really relax either.  I’m really looking forward to a true break.

I’ll definitely take advantage of the flexibility and do some workouts NOT at 5AM, which will be great.  Another thing I plan to do is have a daily adventure, and do something I’ve never done before during each of the 9 days.  Hopefully that will help keep things relaxing and fun and I won’t be tempted to just sit around the house and do cleaning or chores.  Maybe I’ll even describe my adventures!

Looking forward to getting in the pool tonight, since it’s now been over a week since I last actually swam in water.  Rain is in the forecast, but no lightning.  Rain is fine.  It’s not like I won’t be getting wet anyway…

Being Tested, and Being Inspired

First of all, thanks to those of you who reached out and asked if I was OK given the stresses I mentioned in some previous posts.  I’m good, I promise.  We all go through tough stretches.  That’s part of the journey too, and I promised I would tell it straight, so sometimes that stuff will come up.  But I appreciate it.

That being said, the last few days have felt like a test of my resolve.  NONE of my three workouts have gone according to plan.

This-is-Only-a-Test

First, my bike yesterday got pushed to the evening because the wife and I failed to coordinate who would be on the bike trainer when.  When I went down to bike, I heard the bike trainer going and realized I hadn’t let her know I was planning to bike in the morning too.  Now that we are both in training I need to get better about planning that stuff ahead.

No big deal, I thought.  I went back to bed.  Scully was happy with that answer too.

So when I got home from work I needed to try to compress the bike in before the pool opened at 7:30.  I got it done, but meanwhile a thunderstorm was rolling in.  Wouldn’t you know the storm sat over town from 7-10PM, exactly the hours the pool was open for free swimming?  Lightning in the area closes the pool, so my swim was out.  I ended up doing swim bands, which wouldn’t be a big deal but it frustrated me because I had several interrupted swims LAST week.  I worry a bit about falling behind.

Then this morning’s run was a comedy of technology errors.  First of all I was on tired legs, which is pretty normal for Thursday’s runs I am noting.  However, when setting up the intervals on my app apparently I failed to set three intervals, so it defaulted to one.  My first indicator was when it told me I was halfway done with my 60 minute run at 22 minutes.  Then it put me in cool down after the first interval.

My app tells me if I am in target pace or not, but I wouldn’t have that now.  No big deal I thought, I’ll just look at my watch periodically to check pace, old style.  Except my apple watch chose THAT MOMENT to freeze up on me for only the second time ever.  I’d have to restart it, which takes enough time so that it would basically be useless for the remaining intervals.

Ugh.

To top it off for whatever reason, be it the distractions of the tech or just plain idiocy on my part, I ended up going out too far and so my run ended with me still 3/4 mile from the house.  Since I was already on dead legs I didn’t want to add mileage, so I walked home feeling a bit discouraged about these last few days.

Sometimes God or fate lends a hand.  IM sent me an email with an inspiring video, which I attached below.  After watching that I got teary, I won’t lie.  I’m also gung ho all over again.  I can do this.  The little stuff doesn’t matter.
