May 2: Day 79
Today’s Workouts: 5 minutes in Z1, 80 minutes Z2, 5 minutes Z1
I don’t really have much to say today. My heart is too heavy.
Last night I learned Michael Hays passed away. Michael was the race director for my very first triathlon and absolutely one of the reasons I still do this today. I touched on him in my Why I Tried Triathlon post.
If anyone embodies positivity and empowerment, Michael did. There are people on this planet who you meet and they leave an instant impression on you, but they are few. Michael was one of those. I never saw him anything but upbeat and encouraging, and judging by the posts on his Facebook wall I am not alone. Clearly he inspired many, many people to do more than they dreamed possible.
This IM is still for me, because that’s what Michael would have wanted. However, there are going to be some tough points along the way, and if I ever feel like giving up, I’m going to think of him. That’s alone will get me through any tough spot I can imagine short of debilitating injury. And I think that will be my tribute to him–he will be my mental inspiration through the tough times.
I think wherever he is, he will like that.
Goodbye, my friend.
